Go out and play!

Child playing on artificial turfThat was the message from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) regarding concerns of harmful levels of lead in artificial turf. The CPSC released their findings last week after a nationwide evaluation of artificial grass playing surfaces over the past several months. The surfaces tested ranged in age from 10 years installed to less than one year installed and in all cases there was no risk of harmful exposure to lead for children playing on the grass.

"Parents should not be concerned about harmful levels of lead in artificial turf," CPSC spokesperson Julie Vallese said. Newer surfaces "generally had the lowest levels," a summary of the evaluation said, and while "small amounts of lead were detected on the surface of the older fields, none of these tested fields released amounts of lead that would be harmful to children."

Artificial grass now available at Lowes

After completing a successful test launch in Las Vegas in early 2007, SYNLawn has expanded to Lowe’s stores in Arizona and New Mexico this past summer. As of today, SYNLawn is now available in over 40 Lowe’s locations in Arizona, Nevada and New Mexico. In early 2008, SYNLawn will seek to triple the number of participating stores as the expansion continues throughout California. Other states including Colorado and Texas are also planned for the 2008 expansion into Lowe’s bringing the number of participating stores to over 300.

New ownership, new products, new site

synlawn.com navigation screen shot Meet the new SYNLawn. Recently acquired by Textile Management Associates (TMA) of Dalton, GA, SYNLawn has become the only vertically integrated artificial landscape turf company in the U.S., or anywhere for that matter. What does that mean to you? It means you get better quality products, more product choices, better customer service and a warranty backed by the manufacturer. From raw materials to your front yard ... we do it all. No other artificial grass company can make that claim. TMA has been manufacturing artificial grass for over 30 years and produced the original SYNLawn product line. With this vertically integrated approach we have the very best artificial grass products the industry has to offer without the middle man. This makes the process of finding and purchasing artificial grass a whole lot easier. As the artificial grass landscape market continues to explode, more and more information is thrown at you from all directions. How do you know what to listen to? This information overload can be overwhelming to say the least. We believe in a much simpler approach and have changed how you shop for artificial grass.

Use of SYNLawn Artificial Grass is Still Growing

New artificial grasses, designed for homeowner needs, have spread across water-starved deserts across the American Southwest. But they're rarely used in landscapes here, local professionals say. Local owners of artificial turf companies, however, have begun spreading synthetic grass across Chattanooga, Tennessee. In 2005, Finley Stadium's Gordon Davenport field was covered with artificial turf by Universal Textile Technologies Inc. based in Dalton, Georgia.

UV, Warranties & A Suggestion

Todd F. had a couple questions about our superior synthetic turf. We were going to email him as we occasionally do, but we concluded that sharing is caring, so here’s the answers (and some other shared advice) that may help you - our customers and friends. Here are Todd’s questions:

Synthetic Grass, Sincere Generosity

As SYNLawn continues to grow in the Great White North, we continue to tell the tale... Before we share how we helped the Rotary Club in Kelowna, British Columbia, allow us to share a bit about what Rotary is. It seems most places you go, you’re bound to come across a Rotary Club. So what is it and what do they do? (If you’re involved with one or already know, feel free to skip ahead.)

SYNLawn in the Sunset

Sunset Magazine is an institution in American publication history. Established in 1898, the magazine’s intent was to offer a better version of the west coast experience and “chronicle the world of the West over which the dawn of future commercial and industrial importance is just beginning.” Fast forward over a century, and Sunset Magazine is a little different than when introduced in 1898. Today’s Sunset features articles on indoor/outdoor living, cooking with regional ingredients, low water/low maintenance gardening, and Western-style home decor.

Just Doin' It

You’ve heard of a little company called Nike, right? How about a golfer named Tiger Woods? When these top tier, high quality entities united recently to film a commercial, we’re pleased to have been invited to the party. We spoke to the production company that shot the commercial and asked what made them choose SYNLawn for the artificial grass. It was a trip to the SYNLawn store that sealed the deal.

What yarn looks like real grass?

All artificial grass yarn falls into the category of either slit film or monofilament. The obvious questions is which one is the best choice? Slit film is made exactly as the name implies. It is extruded as a solid sheet and slit into smaller ribbons or tapes. Therefore, slit film does a good job of immulating wider blade grass when viewed from a distance. Slit film also has the advantage that it can be extruded at higher output rates than monofilament; therefore, a lower cost. The disadvantage is a slit film yarn will always be basically a flat yarn. Most real, wider-blade grass viewed up close has a spine that cannot be immulated with a slit film yarn. This spine also acts as a support and provides it with rigidity. Monofilament is extruded where each individual fiber is extruded out of an individual hole. This allows the manufacturer to make a variety of cross sections or shapes. This may lead to higher cost due to lower output rates; however, it makes a yarn that is pound per pound superior to a slit film yarn. It also makes a yarn that can be made to very closely copy the look and feel of real grass. The best example that people can relate to is a beam made of steel. A flat piece of steel does not have much rigidity or stiffness when compared to steel configured as an I beam. In our case the flat piece of steel would be a slit film yarn, and a monofilament could be extruded with a spine similar to the concept of an I beam. In summary, as a purchaser of artificial grass consumers should be aware that using a monofilament yarn may be slightly higher in initial cost. However, the resulting product can use different monofilament cross sections to maximize the properties that are required for their end use. Expanding Our Acting Resume

SYNLawn has enjoyed being a part of the entertainment industry, and we get that love right back. Big Love actually. The newest addition to SYNLawn’s acting resume is HBO’s Big Love. In Big Love, Bill Paxton plays a modern-day Utah polygamist who lives in suburban Salt Lake City with his three wives and seven children. Paxton’s character houses his family/families in three houses in a row on the street, with a communal backyard that is nothing more than a dirt patch. Everytime there’s a scene in that dusty backyard, strains of “Centerfield” by John Fogerty immediately enter our heads...”put me in coach, I’m ready to play...”

Why SYNBlue is Superior

The history of artificial grass changed when SYNLawn introduced SYNBlue. Unique in it’s look and design, SYNBlue revolutionized the artificial turf industry as the first synthetic grass that does not require infill. Infill is a loose ground up material, usually comprised of rubber or sand, which is used during the installation of artificial turf. Before SYNBlue, infill was required to provide a more solid foundation and help the synthetic blades stand apart and erect. As a result, infill requires periodic maintenance and tends to migrate in areas that are sloped. Infill material can also be carried away by rain or wind, causing the need to be replenished - a need eliminated by SYNBlue - making it landscapers’ preferred choice for landscapes with rolling terrain.

Synergy in the Community

The SYNLawn Turf Showroom and Design Center in Beaverton, Oregon is a feast for the eyes. In designing the center, the look had to accommodate SYNLawn synthetic turf’s various designs, while utilizing a few of the numerous application possibilities. The care that went into designing the Beaverton store is the result of creating cooperative interaction with area businesses. Why else build a store with a comfortable conference room for landscapers and architects to meet with their clients?

The Great Debate: Slit Film or Monofilament

Going the Distance: Fescue is Here!

SYNFescueSYNLawn is pleased to announce the newest additions to our arsenal of exclusively designed turf products are now available. Named SYNFescue and SYNFescue Premium, these surfaces have been field tested and exceed SYNLawn's existing required quality standards. What makes SYNFescue and SYNFescue Premium different? First, the look. Think of your lawn in that short window before you recognize that it needs to be mowed and you wish it would stop growing because it’s just the right length: that’s the design. SYNFescue and SYNFescue Premium look like a full lawn that is just about due to be cut.

SYNLawn’s Continental Expansion

First, a little clarification: while it’s true SYNLawn is expanding outside of America’s domestic borders, we’ve only just begun in the land of the free and the home of the brave. The province of British Columbia will house SYNLawn’s Canadian national headquarters. The store at #140 948 McCurdy Road in Kelowna will open in the first quarter of 2006 and serve the needs of Canada as the Canadian expansion continues. Reg Henry and company will be “making Canada greener one yard at a time” from a 2,500 square foot location that will include sample areas and a putting green. The area outside the store will feature over 1,800 applied square feet of SYNFescue, SYNBlue and SYNRye. Also opening in the first quarter of 2006 is SYNLawn’s Oregon store. Located a little west of the Beaverton Town Square at 12745 SW Beaver Dam Road, David and Roslyn McFarland and company plan to “kick grass one yard at a time.”

New Mexico Ronald McDonald House

It’s stressful enough to have a family member that requires specific medical attention, but when the required facility is miles away from your home, the expenses can be overwhelming. That’s where the Ronald McDonald House Charities come in. The Ronald McDonald House program began in 1974 and has since become Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC). The three core programs of RMHC - the Ronald McDonald House, Ronald McDonald Family Room and Ronald McDonald Care Mobile - are all focused on helping families in need. Since 1982, the New Mexico Ronald McDonald House in Albuquerque has provided an affordable “home away from home” for families with ill or injured children being cared for at nearby Albuquerque medical facilities. Enter Dale Mochko and the Janet Vargas Memorial Children’s Cancer Fund (JVMF).

SYNLawn Passed the Audition

Hollywood was looking for a strong, colorful supporting type and SYNLawn got the part. SYNLawn is really worthy of a lead role, but despite a commanding presence and amazing looks, the inability to speak limits SYNLawn’s ability to focus on the craft of acting. It’s enough that SYNLawn is the greatest synthetic grass on the planet, so acting is more of a hobby. For a hobby, SYNLawn’s showbiz resume would put half the Los Angeles waiter’s resumes to shame. You may already know about SYNLawn’s appearances on NBC’s Today Show, ABC’s Extreme Makeover Home Edition and VH1’s Celebrity Fit Club. The latest additions to the resume include NBC’s Medium and WB’s Gilmore Girls.

The 2006 International Builders' Show

ibs_news.jpgAnd we’re back! Sorry it’s been so long, but when you’re on the way to becoming the top synthetic grass company in the world, it can get a little busy. Aside from providing the United States with the green lawns they deserve, we’ve also been looking beyond our domestic borders, but more about that another day. We had a booth at the 2006 International Builders’ Show in Orlando, Florida. As described on their website, the IBS “is the largest annual light construction show in the world – over a million-and-a-half square feet of the latest and most advanced building products and services ever assembled.” With such innovations converging in one place, it’s only natural that SYNLawn was a part of the show.

TODAY’s Fake Grass

When England’s soccer (a.k.a., football) superstar David Beckham decided to appear on NBC’s TODAY Show, set designers searched for the perfect artificial grass surface — they found it with SYNLawn. While visiting Las Vegas, one of the show’s prop coordinators discovered SYNLawn at Wynn Las Vegas Resort. On her hands and knees she felt it, picked at it, even pulled at the grass when she realized SYNLawn was ideal for The TODAY Show set. Ironically, by the time she returned home, her counterpart in New York Googling artificial turf, already made the purchase of 1,800 square feet of SYNBlue Premium. Traditionally, the TODAY Show crew used natural sod for outdoor grass settings. Spending thousands a year on natural grass was just a waste. While most of the time they donated the sod, sometimes they had no choice but to throw it away when they were finished. Now, adding grass outside Studio 1A on the Rockefeller Center Plaza is as easy as rolling out the turf and brushing up the fibers. When done, they simply roll it up, store it and use it for another day.

Working Towards a Greener Grass

SYNLawn is concerned with our environment. Our primary focus is to provide an alternative to natural grass to conserve water and help reduce the harmful effects lawn maintenance has on the environment. You may be aware of the fact using SYNLawn artificial turf saves water, reduces pollution caused by gas-powered lawn equipment and helps keep fertilizers from entering the water supply due to run off. But you are probably unaware that SYNLawn is manufactured using a combination of renewable resources, recovered post-industrial materials and recycled post-consumer waste. Our polyurethane backing uses BioBalance™ polymers, a manufactured polyurethane with a portion of the petroleum removed and replaced with soy bean oil. In addition, we add Celceram™, a recovered product of coal combustion from electrical power plants, for stabilization and strength. And finally, a non-woven secondary backing made from 100% post-consumer waste is attached to our polyurethane cushion backed products. This manufacturing process of our backing takes our commitment to the environment one step further. SYNLawn artificial turf products can range from 55-65% green by weight. For an artificial green grass that is truly green, you just can't get any closer than SYNLawn.

Celebrities Get Fit on SYNLawn

One of the hottest shows on VH1 is featuring SYNLawn for it’s fitness stage. VH1's Celebrity Fit Club is based around a team of celebrities competing to see which team can lose the most weight. The eight overweight stars are divided into two teams and challenged weekly with getting into better shape by exercising and losing weight by eating right over a 14 week period. The producers of Celebrity Fit Club came to SYNLawn looking for a grass product that could be used for running, exercising and looked like natural grass. Our SYNGrass sports grass was chosen for the celebrity workout and team challenge surface. It was selected because it provided a soft and safe surface for the workouts, it had superior performance for traction and had the most realistic, natural appearance on camera compared to other artificial grass products.
